Description

Geospatial data representing source water protection areas in North Dakota for community drinking water supplies. These data are updated weekly.

NOTE: Systems are frequently updated and may not all be present in this shapefile. Delineation of source-water protection areas, completion of contaminant source inventory and suscpetibility analysis is mandatory for community water systems. Voluntary program elements are development of management strategies, contingency plans and public education. Please contact the NDDoH-Sourcewater Protection staff, system owner, cities, or tribal authorities for more detailed or site specific information. ( https://deq.nd.gov/WQ/1_Groundwater/1_SW.aspx )

Summary

The Source Water Protection Area (SWPA) maps for Community and Non-Community systems provides a tool for local governments, well operators and owners to protect their drinking water supply. Often SWPA maps are required for environmental impact statements or before permitting a particular business or industrial activity. A public water system is defined as one which has at least 15 service connections or serves at least 25 people on a regular basis. Public water systems may be classified as “community” water systems or “non-community” water systems. Community water systems are typically cities, mobile home parks, or rural water systems. Non-community water systems may provide water to either a transient population (such as restaurants, campgrounds or truck stops) or a non-transient population (such as schools, workforce housing, manufacturing, or power plants). For more information about these definitions, please refer to U.S. EPA, Public Drinking Water Systems: facts and figures, http://water.epa.gov/infrastructure/drinkingwater/pws/factoids.cfm.

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
Sourcewater protection areas are delineated according to the NDDoH-Division of Water Quality's Sourcewater Protection Program Strategic Plan. Participation in the SWP program is voluntary. Not all drinking water sources may be represented in the dataset. Users of the dataset are encouraged to contact cities, local public health units, tribal authorities for more information.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
Users of this data should contact the ND Department of Health- Division of Water Quality, Sourcewater Protection staff or the local governmental entities to inquire if there are source water protection areas in their area of interest that may not be represented here. Participation in the SWP program is voluntary, so not all systems may be represented here. The management of the sourcewater protection areas in the state is dependant on accurate information from the water operators and well owners. Drinking water systems can become consecutive (ie. hooked up to rural water), businesses close and abandon their wells, or businesses simply close and do not abandon the wells; businesses change names and owners, and the state has no requirements for owners to notify the state if they have properly abandonded the well or not.

Lineage

Process step
Description
Geospatial data for source water protection are created according to the guidelines described in the NDDoH Source Water Protection Strategic Plan. There are eight types of SWP delineations. The method used is dependant on the amount of geologic and hydrologic information available for the well and the surrounding vicinity. SWPA are created using ESRI's ArcView GIS software.
