Description

This files contains pesticide drastic scores, chemical use surrogate scores, permitted water volumes, UIC Drastic scores, and total monitoring scores as referenced in the online NDDoH Report, 'Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring' published in 1997. This data was used for prioritizing aquifers in the Department of Health, Division of Water Quality aquifer monitoring program; specifically targeting aquifers that have a high potential for pesticide contamination. This data was developed from surficial aquifers mapped as of 1997 and represents a snapshot in time.

The North Dakota Department of Health plans to have new targeting system rankings ready for the start of a new 5-year aquifer monitoring cycle that will begin in 2017. The ranking is based on compiling soil data, water use, pesticide use, crop data and other data as outlined in the original Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring Report. The North Dakota Department of Health anticipates that this work should be done by early 2017, and an updated version of the “Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring” will be published shortly thereafter.


Summary

This map is the digital representation of the maps contained in Appendix C-Maps of the "North Dakota Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring" (Radig, 1997). also located here (http://www.ndhealth.gov/wq/gw/pubs/GWT.HTM).   Underground injection control (UIC) DRASTIC ratings as referenced in ND Administrative Rules 33-25-01-16 are also in this file.

This data was created by scientists in the North Dakota Department of Health-Division of Water Quality.  The aquifers represented in this map were created by hand-digitizing the county groundwater atlas of North Dakota.  This map is intended to be a representation of the aquifers that are depicted in the 1997 Report, North Dakota Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring (http://www.ndhealth.gov/wq/gw/pubs/GWT.HTM)

This file represents the aquifer map and associated information to reproduce selected figures in the Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring (Radig, 1997).  The map was created by joining in-house versions of the surfical aquifer map that were originally created by hand-digitizing the county groundwater aquifer maps in the mid-1990's.  Not all attributes in the online publication are represented here, rather only those that would be used to re-create the maps that in Appendix C.

Sensitive groundwater areas are vulnerable hydrogeologic settings such as glacial outwash deposits or alluvial or aeolian sand deposits that are critical to protecting current or future underground sources of drinking water. Areas designated as sensitive groundwater areas by the director are alluvial or aeolian sand deposits shown on Geologic Map of North Dakota (Clayton, 1980, North Dakota geological survey) and glacial drift aquifers listed in North Dakota Geographic Targeting System for Groundwater Monitoring (Radig, 1997, North Dakota department of health), or most recent editions of these publications, with DRASTIC scores greater than or equal to 100 based on methodology described in DRASTIC: A Standardized System For Evaluating Groundwater Pollution Potential (Aller et al, 1987, United States environmental protection agency).
